Considered as one of the best and most well-known trainers in New Zealand, Laurie Laxon came to Singapore in 2000 with a wealth of racehorse training experience behind him. After first making a name for himself in New Zealand, he started crossing the Tasman Sea with regular incursions in Australian feature races, and none would be better remembered than his success in the 1988 Melbourne Cup with the great mare EMPIRE ROSE. Laxon showed he had an affinity with mares when he also landed the Hong Kong International Cup in 1993 with ROMANEE CONTI. In Singapore, Laxon has been associated with many good horses such as WHY BE, SADDLE UP, ROYAL CAPTAIN, BIG EASY, RECAST and RAUL to name a few. Laxon has won almost every feature race on the Singapore racing calendar and won the trainer's title four times in a row in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The 2007 season also saw Laxon achieve another career-high milestone when he bettered his own record of most wins (100) in a season at Kranji with 104 wins.

Australian Len Treloar is an experienced horseman having had more than 30 years handling thoroughbreds. The former Cranbourne-based trainer has saddled numerous winners at both provincial and metropolitan levels in Australia. His big-race successes included the Group 2 Angus Brut and the Group 3 Mercedes Benz in 1997. He also saddled winners in the Pakenham Cup and the Mornington Cup in 1999. He relocated to Singapore in 2004, and though Treloar has yet to add his name to a feature race roster, but was not denied his moment in the limelight across the Causeway when he won the Yang Di Pertua Negeri Gold Cup with LIGHT OF SUCCESS in 2005.

Singaporean trainer Leslie Khoo is a former top-flight jockey who rode away to major successes on the MRA circuit, including the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (twice) and the Selangor Tunku Gold Cup (four times). After he hung his boots, Khoo switched to training and was granted an MRA Professional Trainer licence in 2001, originally basing himself at Perak Turf Club in Malaysia. Among his achievements as a trainer are a second in the Trainers' Premiership in 2003 with 33 winners and a fourth in 2006 with 33 winners. His major wins include the Juvenile Million Challenge in 2006 and the MRA Cup in 2007.

Australian Michael Freedman joined the Kranji training ranks in April 2008. Younger brother of Hall of Fame trainer Lee, Michael has also been the Racing Manager at Lee Freedman's Markdel property in Victoria before coming to Singapore. Freedman has learned a lot from his brother after working alongside him for about 20 years, and hopes such a wealth of experience will come in handy in Singapore

Michael Clements trained for five years in Zimbabwe, commencing during 1993. He was crowned champion trainer there in the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons, and was runner-up during the 1994/95 and 1997/98 seasons. He has trained over 400 winners to date, including 48 feature race winners (One Group 2, 11 Group 3, 15 Listed and 22 Stakes races), and a Triple Crown winner. He received his MRA licence in 1998 and has enjoyed his fair share of success since. He saddled JAZZ MALONE to win the Singapore Derby Trial in 2000 and FAIRY TALE to win the Stewards' Cup in 2004.


Mohd Yusof Bin Othman

Mohd Yusof studied the training of horses in Sydney under the tutelage of former legendary Australian trainer Tommy Smith, the father of present-day top Australian trainer Gal Waterhouse. Yusof was granted an MRA professional trainer licence in June 1990. After turning out a few handy gallopers, Yusof rocketed to fame with the best horse he has ever trained and probably one of the best horses to have raced at Kranji - 2002 Horse of the Year SMART BET. The multiple-group winner, which includes the Singapore Gold Cup, Derby and Raffles Cup in 2002 cut a swathe in the 2002 season, following a modest debut in Maiden class. He then went on to become Singapore's second highest stakes earner of all time with prizemoney close to $3 million, only half a million less than another Singapore great, Ouzo.

Multiple feature race-winning trainer Susumu Nigishi relocated to Singapore in June 2006. A veteran trainer for over 20 years, the 54 year-old has to date over 570 winners from some 5,000 starters. Nigishi's feature race wins include the 1993 Shimotsuke Oaks, Kita-Kanto Chrysanthemum Cup 2004, Kita Kano Derby 2004 and Tochigi Cup 2005.

South African Patrick Bernard Shaw started out as stable employee in 1988 before being upgraded to a professional trainer's licence by the Jockey Club of Southern Africa in 1990. Shaw was consistently amongst the top 10 trainers in South Africa and counts his success with TEAL in the 1995 Durban July as his biggest claim to fame. Shaw relocated to Singapore in 2001 and immediately came into prominence in 2002 when his charge PALACE LINE won the International Group 3 Singapore Classic and the Singapore Guineas. More Group wins have followed since and none have been more significant than the 2006 Singapore Gold Cup and Singapore Guineas with MR LINE and the Emirates Singapore Derby with OUR FALSTAFF. Shaw has also won the Kranji Mile twice, with BLIZZ BLESS in 2003 and SETEMBRO CHOVE in 2007.

Singaporean trainer Sam Chua has been working in the MRA circuit for more than 17 years. Assistant trainer to Charles Read since March 2004 and moving to Japanese trainer Hideyuki Takaoka after the passing of the former in December 2005, Chua has earned his stripes looking after a good deal of handy horses including 2003 Singapore Derby winner Lead To Victory.
